I have been writing, in one form or another, for over 30 years. I’ve kept journals; I’ve blogged; I’ve ghost authored. I was trained early in life about proper spelling, proper grammar and punctuation, and conversational writing.
Within the last few years, author friends have asked me to read their manuscripts for my input, after being entertained by my random, written musings. My suggestions were well received and were soon sought after by authors beyond my immediate circle. They began paying me in whiskey, then with cold, hard cash. These assignments have led to a passion of correcting others, and inspired me to formally educate myself through online editing courses and tutorials, which I am still pursuing.
I am responsive to inquiries, comfortable and secure with feedback, and understand an author’s voice. My job is not to rewrite your book; my job is to polish your gift for storytelling like the fine gem it is.
I work in Word, using Track Changes, so that you can see every suggestion and correction. I charge by the word. Payment is via PayPal, using my email address.
I require 25% of payment to secure my time, due upon scheduling. The remaining amount of payment is due upon my return of edits to you. Remaining amount due is calculated by the final word count.
Developmental Editing/Line Editing – $.09 per word
This is a deep copy edit, including some services usually provided as part of a developmental/content edit:
~ spelling, grammar and punctuation
~ appropriate use of point of view
~ consistency of capitalization, hyphenation, italics, abbreviations, etc.
~ overuse or repetition of words and phrases
~ continuity (character traits and plot points)
~ basic fact checking
I’ll also point out any issues with plot, style or characterization—anything that doesn’t quite make sense, or could distract your reader.
Proofreading – $.007 per word
A thorough check of spelling, grammar and punctuation. This is a good option if your story has already had a developmental edit and/or copy edit and just needs one more pair of eyes before publication or submission.
I’m happy to provide a sample edit of your first pages (up to 2000 words), so that you can get an idea of how I work, and if I’d be the best fit for you.
